Q. I thought AEP owns and operates generation and transmission facilities.

by on May 10, 2012

A. You’re right, AEP Ohio does own power plants and transmission lines in the state.

As Ohio moves to a competitive electric market, our power plants will become part of a separate company. This new company will sell electricity on the open market starting in June 2015.

In the meantime, this generation capacity is contractually obligated to Ohio customers and we need time to separate our generation assets from AEP Ohio.

We’re proposing a three-year transition plan. It includes a “Retail Stability Rider” that will provide you with stable and predictable rates while allowing us financial stability through this transition period.

In the end, having more than one strong competitor in Ohio’s electricity generation market should provide benefits to customers by increasing their options.
